Toyota to Change Its Safety Recall Process

Automotive News -- WASHINGTON - During Congressional testimony Wednesday, Feb. 24, Toyota President Akio Toyoda apologized to the U.S. and American Toyota vehicle owners for any company safety lapses and vowed to change the way the company responds to customer complaints about vehicle safety in the future. The hearing was called to address public concerns about sudden unintended acceleration of certain Toyota vehicles and the company's response to the problem.

"I am deeply sorry for any accident that Toyota drivers have experienced," Toyoda told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He suggested that Toyota's quick expansion in the past several years may have led Toyota to focus too much on company growth and not enough on safety as the leading priority.

I have no concern about my Scion (made by Toyota in Toyota City, Japan). It was in the shop for warranty work the last week of February and my dealer told me there were no outstanding TSBs on the vehicle.

That said, I did take it out on an open road a couple of days later and made sure it would go into neutral just fine.

IMHO, Toyota Motor Corporation should consider spinning off 51% of Toyota Motor North America as a separate company.

Then, give TMNA responsibility to make their own decisions for the North American market.

That way, you'd get rid of decisions being scrambled in the translation from English to Japanese and back again.

If Toyota is willing to pay out $3,700,000 to get a lawyer to go away, just imagine what they'll pay to get a plaintiff to go away.

Given that the Japanese have a history of accomplishing pretty much what they set as a priority, Toyota will soon be the safest vehicle on the road.

Even Ford has gotten away from their days of making wheeled Molotov cocktails.
