Toyota sales up 50 percent from March 2009

AP -- JEFFREY McMURRAY

ERLANGER, Ky. (AP) - A high-ranking Toyota executive says the auto company's North American sales spiked around 50 percent the first eight days of March as incentives helped lure customers after a series of embarrassing safety recalls.

Don Esmond, senior vice president of automotive operations for Toyota Motor Sales, said in an interview Tuesday that the early numbers surpassed the company's expectations. Esmond, who was speaking at a conference for Toyota suppliers, didn't give detailed figures.

Last week, Toyota, which is usually stingy with incentives, announced new deals designed to bring shoppers back into its showrooms. Existing Toyota owners who buy another vehicle from the company will receive two years of free maintenance, Toyota said. The automaker also is off

You offer the right incentives and people will take chances under the assumption that "it won't happen to me... I know what to do."

The last Prius incident with the driver on the news and putting a face to it should hopefully squash some incentives.

Incentives will help to quell these bombardments by the media and government (who also happens to be in the automobile business).

This problem is even fully solved yet people are willing to risk their own lives and that of their families for an incentive.

funny, you would think the opposite would be true, especially with cars that have infested computers - a virus in on your PC computer is bad enough, just imagine a virus taking over YOUR CAR!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I will go buy a Prius! They go really fast, even when you don't want them to. All this and great gas mileage! I wonder if I can get 45 MPG careening down the freeway at 90 miles pre hour?

They are trying to win back their buying public and get their serious brake and electrical problems off of the front page.

They already have two strike on them, the second brake fix after only 20 days or so already has 60 people who have come forward and said that it has not worked. In The US we all know that 3 strikes and you are out for the inning.

THIS IS A MUCH MORE SERIOUS SITUATION ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CONSIDER THAT THEY HAVE NOT FULLY ADDRESSED NOR FIXED THE ELECTRONIC BRAKING PROBLEMS.

Without incentives, there will be poor sales. The basic "retail" price does not mean much any more.

Prius is not really a favorite anymore for many, especially when dealership tells the owner nothing is wrong & then he cannot get off the freeway with no brakes. Great that the Feds want it.

Good for Toyota, but it wouldn't be hard to be up 50% of rock bottum sales, now would it? For Toyota's sake, I hope they keep going in the right direction.

Comparing sales to last March is very misleading. That is when the whole industry was close to rock bottom.

This story makes it seem like the problems are past them. Shoot, they just seem to get worse and more widespread with each passing day. I think the worst is yet to come.

We just had a guy in a 2008 Prius have to call 911 for Police assistance for a run away, stuck throttle peddle (thats the thing on the floor of the car the people in Rio Linda call the Gas Peddle). His car accelerated to over 90 MPH on I-8 and went for about 20 minuets down the road before he got it under control. No one hurt this time.
