Graduated Driving Laws Reduce Teen Drunk Driving

ScienceDaily -- State laws that limit driving privileges for teens have reduced the incidence of drinking and driving among the nation's youngest licensees, according to a new study from researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The vast majority of states now have laws that limit teen driving privileges and impose stiff penalties for driving under the influence. Graduated driving licensing laws limit the number of passengers young drivers may transport and how late at night they're allowed to drive, among other restrictions.

The researchers evaluated the effects of those laws on alcohol use and risky driving behaviors among teens in 45 states. The study is now available online and will be published September 2012 in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

Not just teens and some courts are too light on repeat offenders.

Most alcoholics start off in their teens.

Must start somewhere!

Increase fines.

Restricted driving privileges vs saving lives.....I'll take that trade-off.

Easy to point fingers at the teens, but the vast "stupid" on the road are far from being teens!

do we need a law that also limiting driving privileges for "overly" old drivers? no doubt, it will also significantly reduce traffic accidents.

Valricoslash: The L on the cars in the UK are only displayed while they are Learning to drive and have a qualified driver sitting in the front passenger seat, as soon as the student has passed the test the L is removed.
The minimum age to obtain a license in the UK is 17.
The passing grade to pass is %100 and I can assure is a lot harder than in the states.

If it works should be implemented on a Federal level.

I agree with graduated driving laws and would take it one step further similar to what is done in the UK. Every new driver must display a big red "L" (learner) on the back of their vehicle for a year after receivng their license. I would replace the "L" with a "T" (teenage driver)to be displayed on vehicles theya re physically driving from the age of 16 through 18 years old. That way it would be easier for the poice to identify teenage occupance violations and also permit them to pull them over at any time they see them on the phone and texting while driving. It has been proven that for every additional teen in a car, the probability of an accident goes up. Violatons should be met with stiff fines and or community service or both. Failure to display the "T" when caught in other violation should result in doublingthe fine or suspension of the license. Just the other day a teen was killed in my old neighborhood when he was thrown from a SUV which then rolled over him. The SUV had six teens and a nine year old inside and the drive was 16 years old. Florida has teen occupancy laws but they are hard to enforce. Physically identifying vehicles driven by teens would be helpful to law enforcement.
