'Gasoline prices want to decline'

BY DAVID ROEDER droeder@suntimes.com -- Blame rising gas prices on investors raising the cost of crude oil. Blame them on government spending chasing money into commodities and away from currency. Don't blame them on the local gas station.

Those are the views of oil industry analyst Trilby Lundberg, who doesn't see prices rising much beyond current levels.

Analyst Trilby Lundberg, seen here pumping gas, doesn't see prices rising much beyond current levels.
(AP File) "Gasoline prices want to decline. Demand is still low because of the economy," said Lundberg, publisher of the Lundberg Survey. Artificially high crude oil prices prevent that while pressuring stations' profit margins, she said.

In its survey issued Sunday, AAA said Chicago gas prices averaged $2.87 a gallon for regular,

Well, if, in fact, prices want to decline due to lower demand but are being inflated by speculation, they'll soon drop. We'll see.

Blame gasoline prices on big oil and the refiners creating false shortages by producing less fuel and raising the price at the pump. Blame that!

"They want to decline." That statement is a joke. The powers in the oil industry don't care what gasoline wants. They want a steady big time profit.

They may "want to decline", but they sure aren't here. That is hogwash about not issuing some blame to the gasoline stations. Prices range usually 40 cents per gallon on my way home from work. That is ridiculous!

I agree government spending is part of the problem as investors have little else to invest in other than crude - thus driving up the price.

Ms. Lundberg may think gas prices "want" to go down and think that local merchants have nothing to do with high prices, but prices around here ARE going up and the local station is who gets my money first!

Prices here are the highest they've been since the bottom fell out. World troubles were around before the greedy blood suckers started using the littlest thing to drive up prices. Supply & demand should rule pricing & not political reasons.

Then why don't they ?
There is no rational explanation for prices to be 18 cents a litre more than last year at the same time. Inventories are above last year, and the 5 year trend, demand is down, the economy is in recession, and SUV production is practically nil.

Bull! I've been following gas prices here for 24 years and have an uncanny "feel" for how it works. The 6 cent/gallon rise yesterday was too organized and consistent. I submit that there was collusion between the retailers in this town (but no one in his right mind would ever admit to it).
