Ethanol’s Discount to Gasoline Steady as Corn Costs Slow Output

Bloomberg -- Ethanol’s discount to gasoline was little changed amid speculation that higher corn prices will curtail output that’s down 16 percent from a year ago.

The grain-based additive was 57.44 cents a gallon less expensive than gasoline, based on prompt-month contracts for both commodities, compared with 57.24 cents yesterday.

“A lot of producers were out here buying today,” said Jim Damask, a manager at StarFuels Inc. in Jupiter, Florida. “Some of them are short and corn’s strong. That’s put pressure on some of the guys. They’re getting a little nervous being short.”

Denatured ethanol for February delivery rose 1.5 cents, or 0.7 percent, to settle at $2.22 a gallon on the Chicago Board of Trade. Gasoline for February delivery gained 1.7 cents to $2.7944 a gallon on the New York Mercantile Exc

We need to eat corn not burn it. Let's lower the price of a box of Corn Flakes. At $4 and higher a box, it is ridiculous. Pretty soon we will need a CornFlakesBuddy site!

I think we should not force E15 on the population like we have with E-10. They should offer straight gas and E-10 should be less money because there is less energy available in the gas. Ethanol should also be made from waste cellulose so there is not competition for animal feed too.

If we must use this stuff use sugarcane instead of corn. There's plenty of it and it doesn't affect so many other industries or prices!

The article said, "producers are losing 27 cents on each gallon of the fuel made"!! Now I wonder what that statement really means? Get rid of ethanol once and for all as no-one wants it in their gas!!!

Main problem we face seems to be that corn ethanol is part of the mandate rather than simply ethanol from all sources, with some incentive for cellulosic ethanol from "waste" material like corn stalks, switchgrass, sawdust, and even manure.
