Ed Koch Urges Closure of Indian Point

WNET 13 New York - Gotham Gazette -- For former Mayor Ed Koch, the turning point in his thinking about nuclear power came in March 2011 after the radioactive cataclysm in Japan caused by a crushing tsunami.

“It was incredible how the Japanese government changed its warnings from day to day,” Koch said of the response to the multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant that became the worst nuclear disaster since the 1986 explosion at Chernobyl.

“It was clear to me that the owners of the facility were lying. The Japanese government lied at times as well. I thought to myself, what’s the sense of all of this? When I put all that together I said, the hell with it. I said, why are we tempting fate? Germany will eliminate all nuclear power, an

It is a shame that some here can't read the article before commenting. He does have some excellent points. What is telling is that he did not worry at all about these massive nuclear power plants so close to NYC while he was Mayor! More cities and states should be concerned about how their local nuclear power plants are operated and maintained. Several have outlived their design life and are now operation on borrowed time with our NRC handing out 20 year extensions on their operating licenses like they are candy at Halloween!!!

Guess what, the former mayor and his pal-sie wal-sie are full of prunes. Under the radar Japan will re-start all it's nukes. They can't get enough power to make up for their needs. Get this,Wind and Sun can't do the job quick enough, or adequately enough,or cheaply(economically) enough. It is spelled, cost per watt. Once again Obama was wrong. He still never helped his own brother either. The Japan story was on the financial news last day or two.Would the supposedly smart former mayor take any bets about Germany changing their mind and following suit?Tell us he doesn't have a political agenda and stake in his comments. Beware of mainstream media.

The knee jerk reactions to the Japan disaster is amazing. Are there earthquakes in New York? or Germany? So why would you shut down the nuclear plants? The French that get most of their power from nuclear, how many nuclear disasters have they had? Stupid.

Nuclear is only good for devastation and should be removed everywhere, it is not just Iran that is a problem, the whole nuclear idea is the worst problem that the earth has ever encountered.

You can't just shut the plant down when you don't have a back up plan to deliver energy to the millions of consumers that rely on this power.

The problem in Japan was not nuclear power, but unethical people in the power company and Government. If your priority during a crisis is not getting blamed instead of finding a solution, poor performing results will happen.

I live in Westchester County, and the liberal politicians have been unsuccessful in trying to close the Indian Point nuclear power plant for at least twenty years. They have no concern of replacing the electricity that the plant provides for about 1/3 of 9.5 million people. I think the harm that brown outs would do to New York City exceeds the risk of a nuclear problem. Unless Entergy the operator of Indian Point can be demonstrated to be incompetent, the risk is low.

If we want to live in a non risk life it is impossible. There is always risk. It just annoys me that some liberals think that a ninetieth century lifestyle has no risks.

"It was clear to me that the owners of the facility were lying. The Japanese government lied at times as well. I thought to myself, what’s the sense of all of this?"

And that is the problem. When people decide to condemn those in charge for lying to the public can we then finally get justice.

So what really did happen in Japan with this reactor? Does Koch know? Probably not. He sees the same 'end of the world' phrasing and sensational headlines and makes up his mind on what the journalists have told him was the outcome instead of actually finding out for himself.

BTW, for you eco-nuts out there, Japan's shuttering of Nuclear facilities that were not even damaged in the earthquakes and following Tsunami has forced them back to coal, oil and natural gas for their energy needs.
