No new taxes, and at the same time no government manipulation. No laws or regulation stating what can or can not be done, no Big Oil lobby to smother electric cars (see the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car?").
Keep government out of my pocket, and maybe, just maybe, we can together find viable alternative fuels. The high gas prices are already indirectly funding R & D by making it profitable for alternative energy vehicles to be developed and sold: look no further than the sudden increased popularity of the Prius, which for the second time in its career there are again months-long waiting lists to acquire these cars.

There's enough TAXES on fuel. About 1/2 the price of a litre or gallon is TAX.

Yes, I would support a tax hike on gas for R & D of Alternative Energy! Nothing is free, folks. If we want to move ahead (along with the rest of the world) by developing "Renewable" Alternative Energy, someone has to pay for it! Don't hold your breath, waiting for the "Oil Companies" to foot the bill, either!

NO WAY! You can trust politicians to siphon money from the public till to line their own pockets or to waste it on other projects.
See what Obama wants to do with $845 billion more, whether he gets in the white house or not: "A nice-sounding bill called the "Global Poverty Act," sponsored by Democratic presidential candidate and Senator Barack Obama, is up for a Senate vote on Thursday and could result in the imposition of a global tax on the United States. The bill, which has the support of many liberal religious groups, makes levels of U.S. foreign aid spending subservient to the dictates of the United Nations. Senator Joe Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has not endorsed either Senator Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton in the presidential race. But on Thursday, February 14, he is trying to rush Obama's "Global Poverty Act" (S.2433) through his committee. The legislation would commit the U.S. to spending 0.7 percent of gross national product on foreign aid, which amounts to a phenomenal 13-year total of $845 billion over and above what the U.S. already spends." Nightmare here...
The article concludes "Even these increases, however, will not be enough to satisfy the requirements of the Obama bill. A global tax will clearly be necessary to force American taxpayers to provide the money."
Did you get that? "FORCE"...........

It is amazing to see how overwhelming the "no additional" taxes choice has been taken.

Increase tax would further reduce demand. I am not sure if the government would have any 'extra' money to use for alternative energy anyway.

Supposedly money is being used for finding different resources. Why should we be taxed for more?

Instead of a tax HIKE, how about a tax BREAK for R&D? It would encourage people to invest in research if they know that they get a tax break on it. More bang for the buck, as it were. It works for oil.
Why should I, as a taxpayer, be FORCED to pay for research (which usually goes to the more politically connected projects, not necessarily to the more promising projects), when I can volunteer to donate or invest in research that I independently think is promising?
Free markets are more efficient than anything the government can come up with.
Using taxes to pay for research is like sending a check to someone and gambling that they're not just corrupt people who will just take the money and run.

It is sad that people are not willing to make extra sacrifices to get us out of the hole we're in. You can't walk out of a hole; you have to use extra energy to climb out. Only extra effort will overcome a bad situation, and that's why I think extra taxes are ok.

NO Way. because price of gas determines what we drive. People wont drive economical cars unless gas prices are high. So why bother spending all that money, when no-one will buy them
Take for instance the hybrid vehicles, people only started buying them when gas prices went up.

Yes, how else do we expect to get these things funded? This is the problem with the American people - so willing to take but so reluctant to give. "No more taxes," such an ignorant thing to say. If it were up to you people, we wouldn't pay any taxes at all. You know in the EU they are taxed almost 50% of their income!? What's our rate? 7, 8%? If you actually took an interest in the way the government works and tracked its processes and programs (all posted online), you can track where all the money goes. Researching new technologies is expensive, so why do it when we already have a profitable way of doing business (oil)? There's no incentive for companies to research in alternative fuels without government monetary incentives - which has to come directly from us. Think of it as if YOU were the company developing an alternative fuel infrastructure. How would you do it? You'd need money, right? Wouldn't it be nice if the American People gave you money to help fund this, helping you absorb the risk in case your plan didn't work out perfectly?

why can't they use the taxes that they already get? The government certainly doesn't spend all of the fuel taxes on our highways and bridges. Maybe the government should table a bill to use all gas taxes collected on highways, bridges, and research into alternative energy sources!

No I would not. We are already being taxed to death. The oil companies have hardly spent any money on research and development so instead of lining their pockets use some of that money to get us more gas.
