Unfortunately, doing what this question asks and what many people say they do is driving fuel prices higher, cutting back on other things to be able to buy motor fuel. Fuel prices are sometimes high to destruct demand, it isn't happening -- until some are forced.

I'd have to say when the price of gas goes well over $4.00 a gallon.

When it cuts into debt reduction... You all should have thought of that one... It should be the biggest, because Americans are in so much debt!!!

When mass transit is more practical in my area
Lansing has a successful Cata bus system, but,
It is shaky outside of the city
I would love to see other forms of mass transit though, such as
A subway system
or maybe a monorail system

There's not too much left to cut (and I'm not willing to cut what's left) so I guess I'd have to go with the gas rationing (even though that won't be much of a motivational factor considering the fact that I've dealt with gas rationing in Europe for many years)

iluvmysuv......... LOL, you ARE joking, right?
NanaPeaches has a good point but I'm thinking that that nobody could be fool enough to think that oil is unlimited. (or that "ecofreaks" are actually able to effect government)
If what you worry about were possible, gas (and tobacco) would have been outlawed in the 80's and we'd all be driving solar powered cars and have wind powered homes.

I have cut everywhere i can, pack my lunches eat out once a week with the family, sit home almost every night (it's getting old too), vacations consist of sitting home doing nothing (which is not a vacation) I work 20 miles from home, there are no busses or alternative fuel stations anywhere near me. When the horsepower, towing capacity, and fuel availability are more accessible then i will think about getting something....also I work for a auto research company and was looking at a new tahoe with flexfuel, the milage was considerably less running e85 over regular gas, so besides the responsible thing with being green why would i want to fill up with a fuel that i wont be able to go as far with. Plus you have to carefully weigh whats out there i had a dodge dakota with a V6 and got 22mpg on the highway and 9 when i was towing a trailer, now i have a dodge ram with the 5.7 hemi w/mds and i'v gotten up to 26mpg driving home from work and i get about 11 towing a trailer so a smaller engine dosn't always mean better milage (in fact i get better milage than my wifes 2002 dodge stratus with a 4 banger)

I try to conserve whenever I can, and all trips are bundled for the most efficient use of fuel. As a personal note to iluvmysuv......... if you're referring to the drilling being proposed in the Arctic National Wildlife Preserve as the source for "all the oil we want", you've been listening to the wrong people. IF the drilling was done, and the area destroyed for the purposes it was preserved for........... the low grade oil wouldn't be seen here in the lower 48 for at least 10 years. In that 10 years we may have found another alternate fuel which would have made the destruction completely unnecessary.

They nead to make more alternative fuels available in more places like biodiesel. I would love to convert my diesel truck over to biodiesel. Not that I am not getting fair milage in it already. 22-24 on the highway is fair for a 3/4 ton truck. But they also need to have better and safer 24/7 metro link service for Orange County to LA-LAX areas for me or better organization for setting up a carpooling system. I would love to find somone who would commute on my shift.

If they ration gas . . . but that likely would not chnage my driving habits or purchasing habits because I use only 50 litres every three weeks (13 gallons). And rationing would be much higher than that.

Rationing 20 litres a week (5 gallons) would stop most people but would have no impact on my life.

Many of my friends are doing better to plan their trips now when gas is maintaining it's price of $3.00 per gallon.
Other than that it has had little impact on trips. It has had major impacts on other purchases. When you are on retirement income, the money is not available to offset the spiraling costs of everything needed. We need a new energy sourcemthat's renewable and plentiful. We need to be weened off of mideast oil! We need it now!
