In the past month or so the prices in my area, Northern Indiana, went down slowly, then spiked up 20 cents then down again slowly. That's the way It's been and That's the way it'll continue. The reasons presented in the question really have little to do with it even though the powers that be will tell you those are the reasons. They've got the public duped because very little of us know now the entire network from ground to tank works. It's manipulation all the way and at our expense.
I've suggested in the past, in order to at least get the attention of the retail segment of the gas pyramid, we need to hit them in the pocket book. How? Well, they, the retailer, makes very little actually on a gallon of gas. 2-3 cents maybe. Where they make their money is on inside sales.
Scenario: You stop and fill up. 10 gallons and the station has made 25 cents. But, then you go in and buy a soft drink, bag of chips, pack of cigarettes, candy bar and the retailer has made 40% or more in profit on those sales. The mark-up on convenience items is huge. And of course all those items could have been bought at other venues; the grocery store, drug store, cigarette store, etc. That's why they call them convenience stores. A boycott of inside sales could maybe catch the attention of at least the lower echelon. From there, who knows. Needs organization and planning and discipline. Yeah I know...Good luck on that one.

Smart people that stop they ef-ing whinng and taking some action to attend the cheaper gas priced station ONLY as competition and only competition will drive down the price at the pumps
So let's start manning up
I hate men that whine and do nothing about it . . .
Use you effing heads - apy attention - and stop at the lowest only

stock market the main problem. when they buy and sell, that dictates the price. they should make them take physical custody of the gas and oil they buy. i dont think the saudi's sell to us according to stock prices. our people create this rediculousness

Seems California will break another record with gas prices reaching $5 a gallon.
Like others have mentioned we are controlled by the oil companies. The prices should go down as demand is down and supply up. All the predictors show it but......
Now we will hear that gas is in low demand because they are switching between summer blend and winter blends. LOL Any now heating oil for the long cold winter ahead for the east.LOL No major rig damage in the gulf so what will be the next lie we hear. Next excuse is Obama wants the prices to stay high so it helps pay for OBAMA CARE. LOL

There is no reason for a fall in prices - just as there is no reason for an increase.

People don't go on vacation's, so prices drop because of the demand for it. That's how the refineries get us by the #%$&&!. It's a shame , but its called supply and demand.

The Big Oil Companies have more control over gas prices than most people think. Oil, Chemical, Pharmaceutical and many other Big Companies Do Indeed own DC. And are trying to own the rest of us. I agree with 2parrots, OntarioGas, boatfloyd, Lengas and probably quite a few others.

Oil Speculators go on Vacation when school starts. The end of Summer driving is one factor (less demand), but prices have only risen in Vermont nine days after this question. The Middle East is on fire, if you believe their excuses about hurricanes you love Kool-Aid, Presidential politics have nothing to do with oil or gas prices... Love the survey question, but it would be helpful if the choices were more macro or micro economic based and not general fluff.

..neither elections nor politicians drive gas prices...greedy corporate companies and media type who hype prices do ...also buyers beware, if we demand it they will over charge us....reduce our use, the watch the prices fall... ever wonder why when an overseas incident occurs ,or a storm approaches a refinery area -- prices sky rocket even though the gas at the pumps was processed long before the event? Greed. Companies charge us now, "just in case" their costs go up. As consumers we have to wake up, and soon. Got to go gas up !

That's strange, I keep hearing from liberals that the presidential election will drive prices up to make Obama look bad.
Why do we have different views on the same thing, Hardrock50?

None of the above, really... but I picked Prices will not go down as the closest answer.
Prices are still increasing here ad now with all the crap that's going on in the middle east, the QE3 bailout and other future excuses, I think we will be forking out $5 a gallon soon.
