Govt. push for 'green' transportation may end up costing us more

GasBuddy Blog -- We all know which road is 'paved with good intentions'.

That's the road governments on both sides of the Atlantic eagerly pursue; believing that consumers don't know what's best for them and therefore they should be pushed and prodded into buying more expensive vehicles in the name of fuel efficiency and 'clean energy'.

Hybridcars.com took a look at this issue from the British perspective and, ironically, you'll find that motorists here and in the U.K. share nearly identical problems when it comes to government overstepping its bounds to engineer consumer behavior and automobile purchases and its impact on roads and highway funding.

A study by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) commissioned by the UK's...

Truth is lighter cars leave a "smaller footprint" on the roads which are generally poorly maintained because of poor govt management.Do they think they should get more money because they are entitled? What's wrong with this picture?

Be advised it's not a free ride when the govt has a middle finger on any of our affairs,or were you thinking in more realistic terms?

Those who have the data are politicians, people picked by popularity. Not because they're smart and have any horse sense on how to interpret that data.

Those who have the data, and who understand what it means, want to push for just about anything that will decrease the oil usage. Destroying OPEC and other oil producers and oil refiners ability to destroy our economy is a matter of national security. More drilling will not solve the problem, reducing our demand will.

I'm confused.

In our litiginous society, how can a GUMMINT made up of mostly lawyers decide what is BEST in ANY area outside the EXISTING LAWS?

MEDICINE? How many DOCTORSaided in the decisions? FOOD?

ROAD BUILDING? There have been NO significant improvements since IKE, and damn little maintenance.

The list goes on.

A government OF the people needs to consist of a good MIXTURE of folks from ALL areas of life, rich AND POOR, healthy AND SICK, politicians and SMART FOLKS.

Those that AGREE, should MAKE SURE that you get out and VOTE come November. Those that don't, well you can BLAME YOURSELVES for your problems.

If a study by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) works well for the Brits the very least we could do would be to appoint a Special Blue Ribbon Commission (SBRC) to study our problem. After all, if three letter acronyms work for them then a four letter acronym would better for us because we are better. Problem solved, next problem, please.

If 'green' transportation is so good, a government taxpayer subsidy is Not necessary and the market will find a way for it's development and sale. If green vehicles are so good, there will be a consumer demand for green transportation Not government demanding it.
A better 'green' transportation alternative to vehicles is mass transit. Move people in and out of the large population cities with mass transit: buses, local trains, commuter trains and high speed rail to the bedroom communities located far from the work areas. Save the green vehicles for other use and reduce wear and tear on the ever expanding highways, freeways, tollways and bridges. And, there's always the personal car pool with a group of people.
I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept or anything else.
My current vehicle was paid for many years ago and works just fine! Why have another car payment in 'coming out of the closet' Barry's very bad and lousy economy.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

We have a out of control govt borrowing 40% of their spending and deeply in debt. They think the priority is forcing some expensive technology on us that is nowhere near cost effective!

What is wrong with these clueless idiots? Why do people keep electing them?

That seems to be the case for anything new. The government subsidizes the program until it becomes self-sufficient and then lets it live on its own. Except for big oil. The subsidies continue long past their need.

Cut spending and subsidies rather than create more taxes. Stop tax free payments to those who are able to work, but choose not to because they can make more staying home. Welfare should be workfare. Redistribution of money to those who would rather play video games, watch soap operas, and check their Facebook and Twitter accounts all day, creates a never ending life style past on to the next generation. With the economy as bad as it is, many governmental agencies could benefit from workfare employees.

Why is this particularly shocking "news"? If roads and bridges are maintained through fuel taxes why is it a surprise that there will be a reckoning when most of the country switches to using far less fuel? Did someone flunk Econ 101?
