Gas Stations: 'Ethanol Or No Ethanol?'

WYFF -- Gas prices may have dropped in recent weeks, but Linda Jones, of Greenville, would rather pay $3.69 per gallon for gas that doesn't contain ethanol.

"I would say I could drive as long on that than I could if I got more gas at a cheaper price," Jones said, when asked about the higher price she was paying.

And Jones is not alone.

"I get better gas mileage out of it," said Andy Simpson. "There are also less knocks and pings in the motor."

Simpson and Jones are regular customers of Red Robin gas station on Woodruff Road in Greenville. The station sells three grades of pure gasoline, and claims it can "save up to 25 percent on gas mileage."

Ethanol depleting resources is a complete myth. After ethanol is extracted from corn, what's left over becomes livestock feed. Increasing food prices are in fact attributed to spiking oil prices and the blame was displaced to ethanol to keep everyone purchasing oil. Your car doesn't go as far on fuel combined with ethanol? It's programmed not to. Manufactures deliberately program their vehicles to under-perform while running on alcohol-based fuels; so it follows that your car's fuel mileage would suffer from running on fuel with an ethanol additive. While it is still true that you get roughly 15-30% better fuel mileage out of gasoline than ethanol, it costs less than half the price.

The United Diary Farmer locations in southern Ohio recently changed from Mobil gasoline to a local supplier. I contacted UDF customer relations to ask about ethanol in the 'new gasoline'. They replied all their gasoline has 10% ethanol added (at least in the Cincinnati metro area). You can contact UDF directly and ask about your state. Email them:

Pure bunk.

First, ethanol has both a much higher octane rating, and burns cooler than gasoline - two factors that work to prevent pinging (premature detonation of the fuel-mixture).

Second, the difference in BTU content of the two fuels is 15%. Thus the true energy "loss" from using an E10 forumlation is ~2.25% - NOT 25%.

Several folks from Lexington, KY, indicated they cannot get pure gas. That is likely to be true right around the city but if you get out into the countryside your chances are improved. Pure-Gas.org lists several Southern States stores in KY so that is a good possibility. Most Southern States outlets in VA offer E0 gas and their price is always competitive with other stations in the area.

Anyone knowing of E0 stations should post the info in their local forum. There is often an existing thread for that purpose; if not, start one.

Why doesn't Gas Buddy . com or PA GAS orices post lists of stations that sell Ethanol free gas? I'd drive a bit further for it.

The link to Pure-Gas.org, posted just below, is a good place to start but be aware that the info provided is incomplete and contains numerous errors. It was probably good when posted but stations change suppliers from time to time; if no one updates the list then the old info is still available. Looking for smaller, independent stations in rural areas is the best bet. National brands are much more likely to be contaminated with ethanol.

I think the 25% claim is inflated, but ethanol is not a good fuel for internal combustion engines, no matter what the government tells us.

“have used ethanol for years and never had issues.”

You are lucky and probably in the minority. Whether you have had “issues” or not you are likely to be getting fewer miles per gallon. (The 25% quoted in the article is a stretcher but 10% is typical.) Since you live in an area where pure gas is easily available you should try it for awhile and see the difference.

I like their choices since we don't have a choice in this area. I also prefer all gasoline instead of ethanol in my gas. We are paying more and getting less gas milage because of this trash.

Is there a way of obtaining a list of no-ethanol gas stations in a given area or do you just have to call each station?

I agree with you, MaryKayByBJ, but I think the idea is to send less cash to those evildoer nations in the Middle East. At least that's what the previous administration wanted us to believe. Remember Operation Iraqi Liberation = OIL!

Why are any stations offering exclusively gasoline with ethanol?
If I want to save a few pennies at the pump and refill my tank more frequently that should be MY Choice. However, if I want better mileage per gallon, fewer issues with knocks, and fewer trips to the filling station, I should be able to do that too!
If a station ONLY sells gas with ethanol, they are forcing consumers to support the ethanol refiners and corn producers. They are also making a much higher margin because the consumer has to buy more gallons at a MUCH greater percentage than any cents per gallon saved with the ethanol. (BTW, not all areas charge less for eGas.)

It is not opinion 1Casey. Where have you been? Ethanol has a much lower energy content than gasoline and it also attracts water in your fuel tank and fuel lines. Ethanol from corn is simply bad news all around.
